Pride
in
Mind

A social and support group for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex or Asexual people who have also experienced mental health issues and conditions.

Monthly support meetings
We hold Monthly Members’ meetings at a venue in Newcastle City Centre. At the meetings we plan future social activities for the group as well as providing a safe space for members to share how they have been doing and receive support from a co-facilitator who is a BACP accredited psychotherapist, trauma practitioner and yoga teacher. Both facilitators are members of the LGBTQIA community. In addition to support from the facilitators other members of the group also give each other peer support.
Our meetings are free of charge and include refreshments, we can also offer travel expenses on production of a valid bus, rail, or Metro ticket up to a cap of £10.
Free social and cultural activities and experiences
Pride in Mind have enjoyed a long tradition of planning and organizing social and cultural activities for our members. We regularly plan theatre, cinema, and comedy club trips for performances with a LGBTQIA or mental health theme; sometimes both!
Previous outings have included films such as ‘Pride’ and ‘Milk,’ plays such as’ Les Cage Aux Follies’ and ‘Beautiful Thing’ and several performances of plays written by our friend and ally gobscure; a local poet, playwright and comedian who is openly bisexual and has lived experience of mental health difficulties. Pride in Mind have attended many of his performances including ‘A Collector of Tears, Joey, and Housing Contains the Word Sing’.
All performance tickets for members are paid for by Pride in Mind, and travel expenses are provided up to a cap of £10.
Every year we organise two meals out which are free to members. In the Summer we have an outing to Tynemouth for fish and chips and In December we have a festive meal at a restaurant in Newcastle City Centre. Any member attending will have their meal paid for alongside any soft drinks. Please note we have a zero-alcohol policy at all social events. In addition, travel expenses will be provided for members up to a cap of £10.
Additional support
Our two co-facilitators are very aware that sometimes our members require specific support that they are not qualified to provide. In these circumstances the co-facilitators will signpost members to other services or organisations that can help them. Examples of previous signposting has included services such as advocacy, housing, debt management and asylum seeker or refugee status.
Awareness raising Sessions/Training
If your organisation, service, or educational establishment would benefit from learning more about LGBTQIA perspectives and mental health the two Co-Facilitators, Marcia and Mish have a training package they can deliver. To book a session or to find out more contact us at hello@prideinmind.org.uk
Pride in Mind
Although based in Tyneside we also cover the whole of the Northeast of England.
We recognise that LGBTQI people who access mental health services suffer from double discrimination; namely homophobia, biphobia and transphobia alongside the stigma of having a mental health problem. We aim to address this imbalance by empowering the members of the group.
